free web 2.0 webinar

January 6, 2008

…and another free webinar.
If interested, my list of web2.0 presentations are here.

——–
In the recent OCLC Report, “Sharing Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World”, one of the comments in the conclusion is “Many U.S. library directors are simply not engaged in the socialization of the web….less than a quarter…” *

Some may have dabbled or made sincere efforts into using new Web 2.0 tools, but didn’t have a clear goal in creating them, much like learning carpentry and building a house without knowing to consider aesthetic considerations like window placement and interior
lighting.

Here’s an opportunity for those directors, and other library workers and students, to see how the social web works, and has value, strictly along the lines of professional development.

I’m doing a free 1 hour “Webinar” for Webjunction in one week. “10 Ways to Make Your Library Great in 2008, using Web 2.0 will go over how to use and del.icio.us to present and share print and web resources dealing with the 10 themes (or New Year resolutions) and show how to gather more. The info link is here:

http://www.webjunction.org/do/Navigation?category=15543

It takes place at 2:00pm ET on Wednesday, January 16. I’ll be speaking and running a slide show, and there’ll be a blog associated with it with more resources and commentary, as well as a place for folks to share other resourcesand ideas. The presentation will be archived if you can’t make it live, and the blog will be ongoing.

It’s an opportunity for professional development and to learn how to share resources. By the end of the hour, everyone will be able to see how easy it is to share their favorite books and web sites about libraries and the issues we face today.

Handling conflict and noise, developing partnerships, creating great programming, all are terrific New Years resolutions that can be supported not only with resolve, but with the right advice, and that is where the tools can really shine!

Hope you tune in,
Ed Rossman
Interim Branch Manager, Bertram Woods Branch

Free webinars – virtual worlds & libraries

January 5, 2008

Just passing along….
—————-

Greetings!

These free, open-to-everyone online events in January on the general topic of virtual worlds and libraries were recently added to the OPAL calendar (http://www.opal-online.org/progschrono.htm). Feel free to share this information with others who may be interested.

If you want the full OPAL experience, and if you are running a version of Microsoft Windows, you need to download and install a small, safe piece of software, a link to which is available at the entry page to every OPAL online room.

For Mac, Unix, and even MS Windows users who prefer not to download and install software, there is a public beta “light” interface to OPAL that does not require special software. A link to that interface is available at the entry page to the OPAL online auditorium. You should be
able to hear the audio streaming from the room, see the text chat and any co-browsing that occurs in the online room, and be able to text chat back into the online room.

Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, 3:00 Central,
2:00 Mountain, 1:00 Pacific, and 9:00 p.m. GMT/UTC/Zulu:

ALA Midwinter Meeting of the ALA VCL MIG

If you are interested in the work of the Virtual Communities and Libraries Member Initiative Group of the American Library Association (http://wikis.ala.org/readwriteconnect/index.php/ALA_Member_Initiative_Groups)
but cannot attend the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, please feel free to join us online via OPAL. If the Internet connection in the
hotel room where the in-person meeting will be held is good, we will be offering a live audio and text chat stream of the proceedings.
